Case Number: D2025-2907
Complainant: SCUTUM
Represented by: Cornet Vincent Segurel
A French security firm, SCUTUM, has been found guilty of Reverse Domain Name Hijacking after using the UDRP process for force a transfer of the 27-year-old domain scutum.com from its registered owner. While the French company predates the domain registration by about eight years, the sole panelist ruling for the World Intellectual Property Organization, W. Scott Blackmer, found the complainant failed to provide any evidence of bad faith registration or that the respondent knew of the company’s French trademarks when it registered the domain in 1998.
Mr. Blackmer stated the company and its attorneys clearly knew their case could not succeed on merits, given that the word “scutum” is a common one, typically used to refer to shields used by Roman soldiers in antiquity. In his ruling, Mr. Blackmer said SCUTUM attempted to build a case on speculation and innuendo, not facts, handing up his RDNH ruling on September 15, 2025.
